In terms of box sets, I think we can all agree that 2020 was a great year for them. Some real crackers along the way!
Given that artists have time on their hands right now and most need to generate revenue to compensate for not being on the road, it’s a fair bet we could be in for another bumper 12 months in 2021.
So I got to thinking about what artists I’d like to see with similar releases in the next 12 months.
Barclay James Harvest – A really comprehensive career overview in the style of the Madfish Wishbone Ash box.
Gong – Similar to the above. If Steve Hillage can have the deluxe Madfish treatment, why not Gong?
Coverdale/Page – A reissue of their 1993 album with some of the outtakes, including the excellent Saccharine. Probably more likely as a 2023 release, but I’m impatient!
Gino Vannelli – A box similar to the Blue Oyster Cult one, with all of his A&M recordings. An artist in dire need of reassessment.
Laura Nyro – A career-spanning box with great essays featuring contributions from the myriad artists who cite her as a major influence.
Joni Mitchell – The first box in the archive series was impressive, but I have higher hopes for what’s to follow, especially in terms of the sonic quality. In the past, I’ve been lucky enough to hear some ultra-rare outtakes from Song To A Seagull. They are spectacular, and I’m praying they are included in the next volume, which should cover this period.
Saxon – Another act deserving of the BOC style box treatment.
Motorhead – Now that we’ve passed through the classic period reissues (I perceive less demand for an Iron Fist box, for example), maybe it’s time for the ultimate comprehensive career box set with replica sleeves etc.
Be Bop Deluxe – While the Esoteric reissue programme is impressive, I feel an opportunity was missed to also include a vinyl LP in the sets. I have read hints that record reissues are to follow at some point, and I hope that happens in 2021.
Scritti Politti – I note that Green is planning a tour for next year, playing the entire and very classic Cupid & Psyche album. The hope, therefore, must be that this fabulous record will get the reissue treatment. It would be great if the other albums would follow or get a simultaneous re-release. Green released a single this year, so maybe new material is imminent too, well, whatever passes for imminent at Green’s glacial production pace.
Roy Ayers – I’d love to see an album reissue series or a comprehensive box set. Some of those albums are getting super rare and more people need to hear them (not all are on streaming).
Eddie Van Halen – Perhaps it’s still too soon after Eddie’s sad passing, but it would be nice to read news in 2021 that a concerted effort will be made to start releasing material from Eddie’s vast tape library. That’s probably going to take many years to sort out.
Leon Ware – A multi CD career overview, or an album reissue series would be most welcome.

This is a great list for me I would like to see the Deep Purple Made in Europe Deluxe Box Set get the go-ahead, Led Zeppelin Live at Earls Court and Jethro Tull – Broadsword and The Beast! Phil Aston
