Black Francis: 07 – 11 – Deluxe Edition – Box Set Review
In the vast expanse of rock music, few artists have as eclectic and storied a career as Black Francis, also known as Frank Black, Charles Thompson, and the frontman for the iconic alternative rock band The Pixies. My journey through Black Francis’ musical landscape has been somewhat untraditional, tracing his career in reverse. From delving into Frank Black & The Catholics and exploring various live albums, I’ve now arrived at a pivotal chapter: his solo work under the name Black Francis, which spans from 2007 to 2011. Next up, I might even tackle The Pixies!
This is a comprehensive collection that encapsulates this vibrant period of Black Francis’ career. The set includes a staggering array of 129 tracks across nine CDs, featuring five studio albums—’Bluefinger’ (2007), ‘SV n F songs RS’ (2008), ‘The Golem’ (2010), ‘Nonstoperotik’ (2010), and ‘Paley & Francis’ (2011). Also included are ‘Abbabubba’, a mix of b-sides, rarities, and remixes, and two live albums—’Live in Nijmegen’ and ‘Live at the Hotel Utah Saloon’, the latter making its CD debut.
Each album is newly mastered, enhancing the sonic experience, and is complemented by a 40-page booklet filled with new artwork, introductions, and detailed liner notes by Black Francis himself. These additions provide rich context, transforming the box set into a gateway to deeper understanding and appreciation of his work.
Each album within the box set is treated as a thematic entity, reflective of Black Francis’ intent to create music under unified concepts during this period. For instance, ‘Bluefinger’ channels the spirit of Dutch artist Herman Brood, while ‘Nonstoperotik’ delves into themes of sexuality and ‘The Golem’ taps into Jewish mythology.
The included booklet allows listeners to get personal insights from Black Francis on each album, offering a glimpse into his creative process and the narratives behind the songs. This feature is particularly valuable for fans and new listeners alike, as it adds layers of depth to the listening experience.
The live recordings stand out for capturing the raw energy of Black Francis’ performances, showcasing his dynamic range and emotional intensity. The rarity and remix collection, ‘Abbabubba’, offers fans a treasure trove of lesser-known tracks that demonstrate his versatility and willingness to experiment.
Among the noteworthy inclusions in the box set is the ‘Paley & Francis’ album, a collaborative effort with Reid Paley. Initially released in 2011, this album is highlighted for its organic, American roots vibe, likened to an “American version of Rum Sodomy & the Lash,” and stands as a testament to Black Francis’ adaptability and breadth as a musician.
For those captivated by observational and narrative-rich songwriting akin to the likes of Bruce Springsteen or Neil Young, this box set offers a unique perspective filled with raw, unfiltered artistic expression. It’s a journey through the complex, multifaceted career of Black Francis, presenting not only his music but the stories, themes, and emotions woven throughout his songs.
