David Bowie’s Debut Album Reissued: Deluxe Edition with a rare version of ‘Space Oddity’ on vinyl for the very first time
The 26th of July marks an exciting day for David Bowie fans as Deram reissues Bowie’s groundbreaking debut album on both CD and colored vinyl. This deluxe edition not only includes the original stereo album but also offers exclusive tracklists.
Originally released on June 1, 1966, David Bowie’s debut album emerged during the height of Swinging London, capturing the zeitgeist of the era. Critics of the time lauded the album, with NME praising Bowie’s fresh sound as “all very refreshing” and hailing him as “a very promising talent.” Melody Maker called it “a singularly rewarding collection” with “excellent” production, expressing surprise that Bowie hadn’t yet made a bigger impact on the pop scene. Disc & Music Echo described it as “a remarkable, creative debut album by a 19-year-old Londoner” and declared Bowie as “a new talent that deserves attention.”
These illuminating reviews underscore the album’s significance and the promise it held for Bowie’s burgeoning career. This reissue aims to reignite Bowie’s early legacy and introduce his visionary artistry to a new generation of listeners.
Rare Tracks and Vinyl Debuts
One of the highlights of this deluxe edition is the inclusion of single B-sides on vinyl for the very first time, featuring a rare version of “Space Oddity,” Bowie’s breakthrough hit. The reissue features the original stereo album, produced by Mike Vernon, along with an additional fourteen tracks. These tracks include the first fruits of Bowie’s long relationship with producer Tony Visconti, featuring songs like “Let Me Sleep Beside You,” “Karma Man,” “In The Heat Of The Morning,” and “London Bye Ta-Ta,” the last of which makes its vinyl debut in this collection.
Reflecting on his debut album many years later, Bowie mused with characteristic self-deprecation: “Lyrically I guess it was striving to be something – the short story teller. Musically it’s quite bizarre. I don’t know where I was at. It seemed to have its roots all over the place, in rock and vaudeville and music hall and I don’t know what. I didn’t know if I was Max Miller or Elvis Presley.”
These early recordings reveal an earnest young artist at the dawn of his career, working hard on material in which he passionately believed. David Bowie poured his young heart into this music – and it shows.
With this vibrant revival, fans old and new have the opportunity to experience Bowie’s early genius in a fresh, contemporary format. The colored vinyl and exclusive tracklists add an extra layer of appeal.
