Deep Purple – Made in Japan 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition

New Steven Wilson Mixes • All Three Shows Remixed • 10LP Vinyl Box • 5CD+Blu-ray Set • Coming August 15th

Some very exciting news for Deep Purple fans and collectors of classic rock on physical formats.

One of the most iconic live albums of all time, Deep Purple’s Made in Japan, is getting the deluxe treatment it truly deserves. To mark its 50th anniversary, Universal Music is releasing a Super Deluxe Edition of this legendary recording on August 15th, exactly 53 years after Deep Purple first hit the stage in Japan.

This release goes into the very heart of what makes Made in Japan so special and beyond the previous super deluxe edition in 2014. The new editions feature brand-new stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes by Steven Wilson, plus fresh remixes of all three original Japan concerts by Richard Digby Smith. For those of us who treasure the energy of live performance captured on tape, this is a major moment.

Physical Formats to Get Excited About:
10LP Super Deluxe Vinyl Box Set – Exclusive to the official artist and UMG stores. Includes every note from the three nights across 10 slabs of glorious black vinyl.

5CD + 1 Blu-ray Audio Set – Featuring the new Wilson mixes, remixed concerts, rare single edits, and high-res audio options.

2LP Black Vinyl Edition – A more compact release featuring Steven Wilson’s new mix.
Digital version of Steven Wilson’s remix will also be released on all major platforms.
And for those eager to get a taste—a live version of “Highway Star” from Osaka is already available to stream now.

When Made in Japan first came out in 1972, it wasn’t even intended for a worldwide audience. But what started as a Japan-only release quickly turned into a global phenomenon. This was Deep Purple Mk II—Gillan, Blackmore, Lord, Glover, and Paice—at their absolute peak, tearing through Machine Head tracks like “Smoke on the Water” and “Space Truckin’” with ferocity and finesse.

The performances were captured on 8-track tape by engineer Martin Birch, the very man behind some of the band’s greatest studio albums. This new edition offers us a chance to experience those shows in a completely new light—restored, remixed, and revitalized for both long-time fans and those discovering this masterpiece for the first time.

As Steven Wilson says, “It’s all completely as it happened on the night… hopefully this new mix makes it feel even more like you’re there.” And that’s what it’s all about—bringing us closer to that magic moment in time.

This is more than just a remaster. It’s a celebration of a live album that not only defined Deep Purple’s career but helped shape the very sound of hard rock and heavy metal. Whether you’re a vinyl enthusiast, CD collector, or Atmos surround sound fan—this is a must-have.

Stay tuned here at Now Spinning Magazine for more news, unboxings, and reviews when these editions hit the shelves in August. And let me know if Made in Japan is one of your favourites—I know it is for me.
