Julian Cope : Saint Julian and My Nation Underground Set for Vinyl Reissue

Julian Cope’s “Saint Julian” and “My Nation Underground” Set for Vinyl Reissue

Proper Records, in collaboration with Universal Music Recordings, will be reissuing Julian Cope’s seminal albums “Saint Julian” (1987) and “My Nation Underground” (1988) on vinyl. These reissues are set for release on September 20th, 2024.

Saint Julian: A Return to Rock Roots

Released in March 1987, “Saint Julian” marked a significant shift in Julian Cope’s career. Known for his work with The Teardrop Explodes, Cope embraced a rock’n’roll persona that channeled the spirit of Iggy Pop and Jim Morrison. Donning leather and wielding a rock’n’roll microphone stand, Cope delivered a record that was both a commercial and critical success.

The album’s lead track, “World Shut Your Mouth,” became Cope’s first solo UK Top 20 hit, embodying a straightforward garage rock vibe that resonated with a wide audience. The success of this track helped “Saint Julian” reach No. 11 on the UK charts and gain entry into the US Billboard Hot 200.

Despite its rock-driven core, the album offers diverse musical landscapes. The eight-minute closer, “A Crack In The Clouds,” harkens back to the experimental sounds of The Teardrop Explodes’ “Wilder.” Kate St. John’s oboe on the title track adds a layer of depth reminiscent of Cope’s earlier Mercury albums. This blend of raw energy and intricate musicianship makes “Saint Julian” a standout in Cope’s discography.

My Nation Underground: Pushing Musical Boundaries

Following the success of “Saint Julian,” Cope took a bold step with “My Nation Underground,” released in 1988. Known for his ever-evolving musical style, Cope changed his band lineup and experimented with a fusion of funk and Krautrock. Produced by veteran US producer Ron Fair, the album diverged from the rock-centric sound of its predecessor.

“My Nation Underground” produced three singles, including “Charlotte Anne,” which found moderate success in the US. The album opens with a cover of The Vogues’ 1965 hit “5 O’Clock World,” setting a lighter, poppier tone. The seven-minute title track stands out with its unique blend of strings, harmonica, and go-go beats, showcasing Cope’s fearless approach to merging different musical genres.

This album, ripe for rediscovery, highlights Cope’s relentless drive to push the envelope and explore new sonic territories. It may not have achieved the same commercial success as “Saint Julian,” but it remains a testament to Cope’s innovative spirit and artistic vision.

Vinyl Reissues

Both albums are presented with scrupulous attention to the detail of the original UK first pressings and are available on audiophile 180gm vinyl. Whether you’re looking to replace much-loved originals or add to your collection afresh, these reissues provide an excellent way to enjoy Julian Cope’s enduring and influential music.
