Nick Mason Solo Albums to be released as LPs and CDs

Nick Mason’s Solo Albums Get a Standalone Release – June 7th 2024

Great news for Pink Floyd fans and vinyl collectors alike! Nick Mason, the legendary drummer and the only constant member of Pink Floyd through its entire history, is set to reissue his solo albums on individual LPs and CDs. This marks the first time these albums will be available in these formats since their original releases decades ago. The reissues, including “Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports,” “Profiles,” and “White of the Eye,” are scheduled for release on June 7, 2024, and are now available for pre-order.

“Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports” – A Debut Outside the Floyd Realm
Nick Mason’s debut solo album, “Nick Mason’s Fictitious Sports,” was originally released in 1981. This album is particularly notable for its collaboration with avant-garde musicians such as Robert Wyatt and Carla Bley. Recorded in 1979 during a session in America, the album’s inception began with a demo cassette from Carla Bley that captured Nick’s imagination and shaped the direction of the project. Mason himself noted in 2012 that Bley’s demo was “very different from what she had done before and absolutely in line with what I like,” highlighting the unique and experimental nature of the album.

“Profiles” – An Instrumental Adventure with Rick Fenn
Nick’s second solo venture, “Profiles,” initially released in 1985 under the name ‘Mason + Fenn,’ marked his first collaboration with 10cc guitarist Rick Fenn. This album predominantly features instrumental tracks, with the exception of a few vocal performances. “Lie for a Lie” includes vocals from Maggie Reilly and Pink Floyd bandmate David Gilmour, while “Israel” features vocals by UFO keyboardist Danny Peyronel. “Profiles” showcases a blend of instrumental rock that captures the spirit of the mid-80s.

“White of the Eye” – Soundtracking a Thriller
“White of the Eye,” released in 1987, is a soundtrack album for the British thriller movie of the same name. Once again collaborating with Rick Fenn, this album accompanies the intense and mysterious ambiance of the film, delivering an auditory experience that complements the cinematic journey.

For fans of Nick Mason and Pink Floyd, these reissues offer a fresh opportunity to experience the depth and breadth of Mason’s musical talents outside of the iconic band’s context. These releases also provides new fans with an accessible way to explore lesser-known works of a rock legend. Each album showcases a different facet of Mason’s musical interests, from jazz-infused experimental rock to instrumental soundscapes and film scores.

Beyond his work with Pink Floyd, Nick Mason has continued to engage with his musical roots, notably through his band Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets. Formed in May 2018, the group focuses on performing early Pink Floyd material, much of which had never been played live before. This endeavor has been met with critical acclaim and has delighted fans worldwide with performances that highlight the band’s most experimental and formative music.
