PREYRS – The Wounded Healer : Album Review

PREYRS are a Belfast-based alternative rock band, fronted by the striking and emotionally powerful vocalist Amy Montgomery.

This is a modern rock album, but not in the traditional sense.

There’s a real punk edge, a sense of raw emotion, but it’s all wrapped in something much more expansive. At times, I even felt there were hints of symphonic or cinematic layers weaving through the sound.

And one thing stands out immediately…

👉 Reverb. Everywhere.

This is an album drenched in it.

  • Reverb on the drums
  • Reverb on the guitars
  • Reverb on the vocals

And it creates a very unusual sensation…

It’s almost like no matter how loud you turn it up, you never quite get “closer” to the band. It feels like you’re always standing a few rows back from the stage, surrounded by this wash of sound.

Now, whether you love that or find it a little overwhelming will come down to personal taste – but there’s no doubt it’s a deliberate artistic choice.

And interestingly, when I played this with Sue, she immediately picked up on something I hadn’t fully clocked…

“Listen to the drums.”

That’s where some of that Siouxsie and the Banshees influence really reveals itself.
