Album Review: Trifecta’s “The New Normal”
This album is a masterful blend of jazz rock and jazz fusion, showcasing the incredible talents of its members.
Trifecta is composed of three outstanding musicians:
Adam Holzman on keyboards, Craig Blundell on drums and Nick Beggs on bass
I recently interviewed Adam Holzman, and I can’t stress enough how brilliant he is. He’s one of the finest keyboard players of his generation, with a pedigree that includes working with his father’s label, Elektra Records. If you haven’t seen the interview, it’s a must-watch for any fan of jazz fusion or progressive rock.
“The New Normal” is Trifecta’s second album and marks a significant step forward from their debut. The band, which came together during sound checks while touring with Steven Wilson, has refined their sound and produced a double vinyl album that is also available on CD.
This album features a delightful mix of jazz fusion and rock, with a total of 19 tracks. Adam Holzman himself pointed out that the CD version sounds particularly fantastic, so it’s worth checking out in that format as well.
“Beck and Call”: The opening track is heavily influenced by Jeff Beck, especially his fusion work. It’s a fantastic piece that sets the tone for the album.
“Chinese Fire Drill”: One of my favorites, it showcases the band’s ability to create complex, engaging instrumental tracks.
“Wacky Tobacky”: Another standout track with a quirky title, reflecting the band’s unique sense of humor.
“Once Around the Sun with You”: This is one of the few tracks with vocals, adding a different texture to the album.
“Ornamental Lettuce”: Featuring some wonderful Hammond organ playing, it’s a great example of the album’s jazz rock blend.
Nick Beggs’ bass playing throughout the album is reminiscent of Marcus Miller, particularly in how he uses slap bass techniques to drive the grooves. The instrumental tracks allow the band to explore and expand their musical ideas, resulting in a rich, dynamic listening experience.
“The New Normal” is a fantastic album that leans heavily into jazz rock while maintaining a melodic and accessible sound. Fans of progressive rock and jazz fusion will find a lot to love here. Trifecta’s blend of talent and creativity makes this album a must-listen.
If you’re looking for some new jazz rock to get into, I highly recommend “The New Normal” by Trifecta. Their previous album is also still available on CD and vinyl at Burning Shed. Be sure to check it out and enjoy the brilliant musicianship of this incredible band.
