Whitesnake: Into The Light Deluxe Box Set Review – This is MORE than a Remix!
Please watch the video for a full 30 minute in depth review
In this review of Whitesnake’s Into The Light Deluxe Box Set, I look at how this 6-CD set goes far beyond typical remasters. The set features David Coverdale’s three solo albums (Into The Light, Northwinds, and his self-titled debut) with not just new remixes, but also new overdubs and additional elements.
This is more than just cleaning up old tracks. David Coverdale, revisiting his own work, added fresh layers of instruments and vocals, transforming the tracks into something that feels both familiar and modern. For example, on Northwinds, songs like “Only My Soul” are restructured, omitting some familiar elements in favor of a more rock-forward approach. This remix strategy makes the album feel brand new in many ways, offering fans an alternative listening experience.
The remix for the 1977 debut album, now titled 1977 to differentiate from the band, introduces subtle but noticeable changes. The vocals, guitar work, and some instrumental phrasing differ from the originals, with new overdubs seamlessly woven into the tracks.
One of the most exciting features of the set is the inclusion of David Coverdale’s 1968 home demos on the remix disc. These tracks, capturing a young Coverdale with a raw, soulful sound, provide a fascinating glimpse into his early potential.
Phil also delves into the technical challenges faced during the remix process. With some original multitracks lost, AI-assisted tools were used to extract and recreate separate audio stems, allowing Coverdale and his team to rework the material.
The package comes complete with a 60-page booklet full of interviews, memorabilia, and in-depth liner notes. The comprehensive nature of this release—balancing remixes, remasters, and fascinating archival material—makes it a must-have for longtime Whitesnake fans.
