Exploring the Creative Genius Behind Jordan Rudess’ New Album: Permission to Fly

In the world of progressive rock, few names command the respect and admiration that Jordan Rudess does. Best known as the virtuoso keyboardist of Dream Theater, Jordan has consistently pushed the boundaries of music. Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with him to discuss his latest solo project, Permission to Fly. This album marks a departure from his previous work, and as Jordan himself described it, this is not just another solo album—it’s a “band project.”

Jordan has always been known for his wildly progressive and intricate compositions, but Permission to Fly is different. “I wanted to create an album that wasn’t just about the Jordan Rudess experience,” he explained. “I wanted it to feel like a band project.” This shift in approach is evident from the moment you press play. The album blends Jordan’s signature progressive flair with more accessible and melodic elements, making it a diverse listening experience.

One of the standout features of Permission to Fly is the inclusion of vocals, which is not always a prominent element in Jordan’s solo work. “Finding the right voice was crucial,” Jordan said. After a thorough search, he discovered Joe Payne, whose vocals bring a new dimension to the music. “Joe brought his magic to the album, contributing not just lead vocals but also intricate vocal arrangements that really make the songs come alive,” Jordan added.

Drummer Darby Todd, whom Jordan met during Dream Theater’s Dreamsonic tour, provides the rhythmic backbone of the album. Jordan spoke highly of Darby’s ability to handle the complex rhythms and time signatures that are hallmarks of progressive rock. “He just got it,” Jordan said. “From the gentle tracks to the extreme prog sections, Darby nailed it every time.”

Adding to the album’s unique sound is Steve Dean, a professional dentist by day and an exceptional guitarist by night. “Steve brought a life to the guitar parts that I wasn’t able to achieve on my own,” Jordan remarked. His contributions, alongside those of young Chilean guitarist Bastion Martinez, add layers of complexity and emotion to the music.

Jordan’s daughter, Ariana, played a significant role in shaping Permission to Fly. She not only wrote all the lyrics for the album but also co-produced the project, helping Jordan sift through dozens of ideas to find the most magical moments. “Ariana knows me so well,” Jordan said with pride. “She was able to create lyrics that fit perfectly with the melodies and themes I had in mind.”

Permission to Fly is an album that rewards repeated listening. Its complex arrangements and emotional depth reveal more with each spin. “It’s one of those albums where the more you play it, the more it gives back to you,” Jordan said. Fans of Dream Theater will find much to love here, but the album also showcases Jordan’s versatility and willingness to explore new musical territories.

As our conversation came to a close, it was clear that Permission to Fly is a deeply personal project that reflects Jordan Rudess’ evolution as an artist. Whether you’re a fan of progressive rock or just someone who appreciates finely crafted music, this album is a must-listen. It’s a testament to Jordan’s ability to bring together a diverse group of musicians to create something truly special.
