Phil Mogg – Mogg’s Motel: A Rock Triumph from a Legendary Voice
Hi everyone, Phil Aston here from Now Spinning Magazine with an album review that I’ve been itching to share with you. Today, This is the incredible new album Mogg’s Motel by Phil Mogg, formerly of UFO. For anyone who’s been a fan of Phil’s unmistakable voice, storytelling lyrics, and rock pedigree, this album is going to hit all the right notes.
I’ll admit, this review has been a long time coming. I was lucky enough to interview Phil Mogg earlier this year—what a moment that was! Hearing Phil’s passion and excitement for this project firsthand made it all the more special.
I got an early digital preview of the album, but I’ve been hunting down a physical copy ever since. The version I have is the stunning red vinyl, one of only 880 pressed. It was a challenge to find at a reasonable price, and I’ll probably grab the CD too because this album is just that good.
Let’s get straight to it: Mogg’s Motel is one of the standout rock albums of 2024. It’s different from UFO’s classic sound—this is its own beast, raw and intimate, with a production that makes you feel like the band is playing right in your living room.
The band lineup is stellar:
Phil Mogg – Vocals
Tony Newton – Bass
Joe Lazarus – Drums
Neil Carter – Guitars & Keyboards
Tommy Gentry – Guitars
Track Highlights
“Apple Pie”
The album kicks off with this energetic, rock ‘n’ roll opener. There’s a sense of urgency, and it sets the tone perfectly. It’s got a live, gritty production that’s both nostalgic and fresh.
“Sunny Side of Heaven”
One of my absolute favorites! Featuring female vocalists Zoë Delve and Lori Mansour, the harmonies add a soulful depth. It’s a driving anthem with a reflective touch—a track that feels both powerful and personal.
“The Princess Bride”
Inspired by the beloved film, this track is a cinematic masterpiece in its own right. Strings, chugging riffs, and a soaring guitar solo make it a standout moment on the album.
“The Wrong House”
An uplifting, anthemic rock song. The energy is infectious, and it’s one of those tracks that will have you cranking up the volume.
“Harry’s Place”
This instrumental interlude is moody and atmospheric, with film noir vibes. It’s like the setup for a cinematic thriller, seamlessly transitioning into the next track.
“Lies, Lies, Lies”
Funky and infectious, this track boasts a killer bassline and wah-wah-laden guitar solo. It’s impossible to sit still while listening.
“Shane”
A heartfelt nod to the classic film, this track is steeped in nostalgia and cinematic imagery. It’s a touching and beautifully crafted piece.
Production and Atmosphere
The production deserves its own shout-out. Mogg’s Motel feels alive—it’s raw, direct, and free from over-polishing. The guitars have bite, the drums pack a punch, and Phil’s voice is as rich and emotive as ever. It’s an album that captures the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll while telling deeply personal and vivid stories.
Phil’s songwriting is sharp, observational, and often cheeky, with a flair for painting vivid images through his lyrics. His voice, described as “velvet chocolate” (by me!), wraps around every track with heartfelt passion.
This isn’t just an album for UFO fans—it’s for anyone who loves honest, in-your-face rock music. Phil Mogg has crafted something truly special here. It’s bold, it’s uplifting, and it’s one of the best rock albums of the year.
So, is it a 10 out of 10? Absolutely! Someone once told me I couldn’t rate everything a 10, but I’ll gladly break that rule for Mogg’s Motel. If you love rock, this is an album every home should have.
