Unboxing and Package Overview

The set is housed in a sleek slipcase reminiscent of recent deluxe editions from Demon / Edsel Records, featuring extensive visual material from the era, including press clippings and live performance photos. Included is a beautifully detailed booklet containing a new essay based on fresh interviews, delving into fascinating insights such as how the original tapes were rediscovered in a Peters and Lee box!

Each CD slot is adorned with vibrant photography and archival materials. However, one minor downside is the somewhat tricky disc extraction—initially challenging, but manageable with care.

Audio and Remix Quality

Where this deluxe edition truly shines is its sound quality. Newly mixed and mastered by Damon Lion Shaw, these recordings bring listeners significantly closer to the raw, vibrant energy of Status Quo’s legendary live performances. Francis Rossi himself, previously dismissive of the original recordings, has endorsed this edition enthusiastically after hearing the powerful remix.

The vocals, once distant and buried in crowd noise, are now clear and upfront, immersing listeners right into the frontline of the action. The remix breathes new life into classics like “Rain,” “Roadhouse Blues,” “Caroline,” and the epic “4,500 Times,” enhancing their visceral impact.

Packaging and Price Considerations

At approximately £70, some may question the pricing, particularly when compared to similar recent deluxe editions. Though the package design is attractive and rich with memorabilia, its construction could be slightly more user-friendly. Nevertheless, considering the immense remixing effort and improved audio clarity, it ultimately represents excellent value for dedicated fans.

Standout Moments and Recommendations

Highlights abound, with blistering versions of fan-favourites like “Rain,” “Roadhouse Blues,” and “Big Fat Mama.” The live rendition of “Is There a Better Way” from the Blue for You album stands out particularly, capturing Status Quo at their energetic peak.

Despite minor packaging critiques, this definitive edition of Quo Live is an essential purchase for Status Quo enthusiasts and collectors alike. The remastered sound transforms a previously enjoyable but distant experience into a vibrant, immediate, and unforgettable listen.
