UFO: Covenant + Sharks 3CD Set Review

Review of UFO: Covenant + Sharks 3CD Set from Cherry Red Records

This collection not only includes the studio albums “Covenant” and “Sharks,” but also a live recording from Buffalo in 1995.

This 3CD digipack set is very well put together. It folds out into three panels, showcasing the discs with images of the band. In the left-hand sleeve, you’ll find a booklet featuring a new interview with Michael Schenker, providing some background to this period of UFO’s history. Rich Davenport penned the liner notes, which are insightful and complemented by quotes from Martin Popoff’s book, “UFO: Shoot the Lights Out.” The booklet is not just filled with pictures but offers a really good overview to the stories behind these two albums.

Originally released in 2000, “Covenant” marked a significant moment in UFO’s history. This album was a follow-up to “Walk on Water” and brought together the classic Schenker lineup. Despite internal struggles, including Schenker’s battles with alcohol, the band managed to produce a strong collection of songs. Highlights include “Midnight Train” and “Fool’s Gold,” which showcase driving riffs and memorable melodies.

Production-wise, the remastering on this set adds a touch of sheen to the already great-sounding album. Schenker’s praise for Phil Mogg is evident in the way the songs were crafted, with Mogg’s storytelling lyrics fitting perfectly with Schenker’s instrumental compositions.

“Sharks” followed in 2002 and, while perhaps not as immediate as “Covenant,” it still offers a solid listening experience. Tracks like “Someone’s Gonna Have to Pay” and “Fighting Man” stand out, with Schenker’s guitar work and Mogg’s vocals in fine form. The album has a slightly bluesier feel, and although it might not hit the same highs as “Covenant,” it’s a worthy addition to the UFO catalog.

The live disc in this set is a real treat. Originally part of the “Covenant” release, this recording from Buffalo in 1995 includes expanded tracks that were previously only available on a rare Japanese import. The live set features standout performances of “Push to the Limit” and “Venus” from “Walk on Water,” alongside classics like “Rock Bottom” and “Too Hot to Handle.” The sound quality is excellent, capturing the energy of a band that was still capable of delivering powerful live performances despite their internal conflicts.

For those who might wonder if this set is just another reissue, it’s important to consider where you are in your UFO journey. These albums are over two decades old, and this set offers an excellent opportunity to revisit or discover them anew. The remastering enhances the original recordings, and the inclusion of comprehensive liner notes and the live disc makes this package a standout.

Phil Mogg’s vocals deserve special mention. He remains one of the UK’s finest rock vocalists, his voice rich with storytelling nuance and emotional depth. Schenker’s guitar work, marked by his melodic sensibility, sets him apart from typical metal guitarists.
