Hawkwind: The Punk-Proof Psychedelic Rebels
Hawkwind occupies a unique space in rock history. Emerging from the counterculture of the late ’60s, they defied trends and continued to carve their niche throughout the decades.

When punk rock exploded in the UK during the late ’70s, many legacy bands were dismissed as “dinosaurs.” But not Hawkwind. They were embraced by punks and anarchists alike, thanks to their anti-establishment ethos and raw, experimental energy. Bands like The Sex Pistols admired their authenticity.

For me, Hawkwind always felt dangerous in a way few bands did. Tracks like Silver Machine and Urban Guerrilla didn’t just sound rebellious—they were rebellious. And the live footage included in this box set captures the band at their chaotic, untamed peak.

Design and Packaging: A Mixed Bag
While the content of this Super Deluxe Edition is excellent, the design of the box set left me wanting more.

Pros

Consistent with Cherry Red/Esoteric’s other Hawkwind reissues.
The booklet and poster are beautifully done and immerse you in the Hawkwind universe.

Cons

The Blu-rays are housed loosely in the packaging, which feels less luxurious for a premium product.
Adding an extra foldout panel or separate holder for the Blu-rays would have elevated the experience.
Considering the price point, I feel the design could have been more thoughtful. These sets are aimed at collectors, and the presentation should reflect that.

The Music: A Revelation
Remaster vs. Remix

The remastering is solid, but the real star here is Steven W. Taylor’s remix. It’s like removing a blanket from the speakers—the sound is clear, dynamic, and engaging.

This was the first Hawkwind album to feature Lemmy, and his basslines are now more pronounced than ever. You can hear his voice and early playing style, which would later define Motörhead.

5.1 Surround Sound

Hawkwind’s music is tailor-made for surround sound. The 5.1 mix immerses you in a swirl of cosmic effects, layered instrumentation, and trippy atmospheres. It’s an auditory journey that few other bands can match.

Personal Reflections: Hawkwind’s Timeless Appeal
I first encountered Hawkwind as a teenager in Birmingham during the early ’70s. Silver Machine and Urban Guerrilla were my entry points, and they left a lasting impression. The lyrics of Urban Guerrilla—sharp, subversive, and unafraid—captured the rebellious spirit of the time.

As I grew older, Hawkwind remained a constant in my musical journey. Even when punk and new wave dominated the scene, Hawkwind’s raw, independent ethos kept them relevant. They were always cool.

With each reissue in this series, I’ve found myself rediscovering their magic. The new mixes breathe fresh life into these recordings, and Doremi Fasol Latido is no exception. It may well become my favorite Hawkwind album.

Original Chart Data
Released during the golden age of progressive and space rock, Doremi Fasol Latido reached #14 on the UK Albums Chart. Its innovative sound solidified Hawkwind’s reputation as pioneers of space rock.

Who Is This Box Set For?
If you’re a die-hard Hawkwind fan, this set is a must-have. The new mixes, live material, and video content offer a comprehensive look at this era.

For casual fans or those new to the band, the 2CD version is a more affordable entry point that still includes the essentials.
