David Coverdale’s Golden Journey: From Deep Purple to Whitesnake
In 1973, a young and budding 21-year-old David Coverdale made his mark in the music world by joining the iconic band, Deep Purple. This was just the beginning of his illustrious career. After creating three timeless albums with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Coverdale introduced the world to his own band, Whitesnake.
Fast forward to today, and we’re celebrating the golden 50th anniversary of Coverdale’s debut with Deep Purple. To mark this milestone, a special edition of The Purple Album is set to release. This album, originally from 2015, is Whitesnake’s homage to Coverdale’s memorable years with Deep Purple. The refreshed version boasts a remix, remaster, and even some never-before-heard tracks, including the very demo that began Coverdale’s journey with Deep Purple.

The Purple Album saw Coverdale collaborate with talents like Reb Beach, Michael Devin, Joel Hoekstra, and Tommy Aldridge. Together, they breathed new life into classics from Burn, Stormbringer, and Come Taste The Band, giving fans fresh renditions of hits like “Lay Down Stay Down” and “Lady Double Dealer.”
But that’s not all. The 2-CD/Blu-ray edition is packed with live recordings, concert visuals from The Purple Tour, official music videos, and a treasure trove of unreleased content. Dive deep into the making of the album with behind-the-scenes footage and Coverdale’s personal commentary on each track.
A highlight of this collection is the four-song demo from 1972, recorded by Coverdale with The Fabulosa Brothers. This demo was Coverdale’s ticket into Deep Purple. Rediscovered among his late mother’s possessions, Coverdale recalls in the album’s liner notes, “Finding the tape in my Mam’s trunk, 30 years after she left us, felt like a gift from above.” The collection also unveils demos from Coverdale’s time crafting songs for Deep Purple’s 1974 album, Stormbringer.
