UFO : Obsession : 3LP Vinyl / 2CD Deluxe – Reviewed

UFO’s ‘Obsession’ Deluxe Edition Review – A Must-Have for Fans

The new deluxe edition of UFO’s classic 1978 album Obsession is available as a 2-CD set and a 3-LP vinyl edition.

The Packaging and Editions: The 3-LP set is beautifully packaged, with a detailed trifold layout featuring band photos, liner notes, and a fold-out poster. It includes the original album plus a 2024 remix of the live show at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland. The 2-CD set follows the same design, but instead of a booklet, there’s a fold-out poster with similar info.

The Music – Why ‘Obsession’ Deserves Your Attention: Initially, Obsession may not have been my top pick among UFO’s catalog, but this reissue has made me appreciate it more. Michael Schenker’s guitar work is as melodic and expressive as ever, weaving seamlessly around Phil Mogg’s underrated vocals. Tracks like “Only You Can Rock Me” and “Hot ‘N’ Ready” highlight Schenker’s unique ability to balance aggressive riffs with intricate, melodic solos.

Phil Mogg’s voice carries a mix of angst, emotion, and warmth that resonates throughout the album. He remains one of rock’s most underappreciated vocalists, bringing depth and feeling to tracks that range from rock anthems to softer, more reflective pieces.

Live Material and Bonus Content: One of the standouts in this set is the live concert recorded at the Agora Ballroom. Newly mixed, the show sounds fresher and more vivid than previous versions. Songs like “Love to Love” and “Lights Out” showcase the band’s dynamic live presence, with Schenker’s guitar cutting through the mix beautifully. It’s clear why they chose this concert—some tracks appear nowhere else, making this a must have for fans.

The Original Album’s Chart Success: Obsession was a crucial album for UFO, marking their growing international popularity. Upon its release in 1978, it peaked at #41 on the UK Albums Chart and made its way to #144 on the US Billboard 200. The album’s singles, including “Only You Can Rock Me,” helped solidify the band’s presence in the hard rock scene.

Worth Every Penny: Whether you opt for the vinyl or the CD set, this edition of Obsession is well worth your time. The remastering is top-notch, and the new mixes breathe fresh life into the tracks. Plus, the live set from Cleveland is one of the best live recordings of UFO I’ve heard. If you’re a fan of the classic Schenker era, this is just fabulous!
