Nektar : Recycled : 5CD Box Set Review

Unboxing Review: Nektar – “Recycled: 5CD Box Set”

If you’re a fan of Nektar or progressive rock in general, this set is a must-have, featuring the band’s 1975 concept album and so much more.

“Recycled,” originally released in 1975, addresses environmental concerns and human impact on our planet, making it just as relevant today as it was back then. This 5-CD set from Esoteric Recordings includes:

CD 1: Original album remastered.
CD 2: New stereo mix by Paschal Byrne.
CD 3: Live concert from Toronto, Canada (May 26, 1976).
CD 4-5: 2-CD live concert from Long Island, New York (July 24, 1976).
The set comes with a substantial booklet featuring essays from Derek “Mo” Moore and Mike Brockett (written in January 2024), as well as insights from compiler Mark Powell. The booklet includes extensive photos, band recollections, and lyrics, all adding layers to the story behind “Recycled.”

“Recycled” is a concept album revolving around environmental destruction and the need for sustainable living. With lyrics highlighting the reckless use of the Earth’s resources, the band created a seamless musical journey that flows from one track to the next. Despite listing 11 tracks on the back, the album plays like a single composition, emphasizing the concept’s continuity.

In 1975, the band was at a creative peak, combining progressive rock elements with ambitious production. Recorded initially in Germany and then finished in London, the album features orchestral arrangements and choirs, creating a rich and immersive listening experience.

Disc 1 – Original Album (Remastered): The remastered original mix brings out the nuances in Roye Albrighton’s guitar work and Larry Fast’s synthesizers.

Disc 2 – New Stereo Mix: Paschal Byrne’s new stereo mix breathes fresh life into the album, giving it a modern feel while retaining the original’s spirit.

Disc 3 – Toronto Live Concert (May 26, 1976): This concert recording is remarkably clear and showcases Nektar at their live best.

Disc 4-5 – Long Island Live Concert (July 24, 1976): Despite some fades at the beginning of each CD, the sound quality is superb, capturing the band’s dynamic energy. Highlights include “Tab in the Ocean” and a powerful rendition of “Recycled.”

Musicians Involved
Nektar’s lineup on “Recycled” featured:

Roye Albrighton: Guitar, Vocals
Derek “Mo” Moore: Bass, Vocals
Allan “Taff” Freeman: Keyboards, Vocals
Ron Howden: Drums, Percussion
Larry Fast: Synthesizers

The choir sections, conducted by Norman Hurricane Smith, added a unique touch, and Larry Fast’s synthesizer expertise (later known for his work with Synergy and Peter Gabriel) elevated the band’s sound to a new level.

“Recycled” was well received by the progressive rock community upon its release in 1975, particularly in Germany and the United States, where Nektar had a dedicated fan base. However, its environmental message and complex structure didn’t resonate with a broader audience at the time. Despite this, it remains a pivotal work in Nektar’s discography, often hailed as a hidden gem of 1970s progressive rock.

“Recycled” marks the final album featuring the original Nektar lineup before significant changes occurred. This box set provides an essential look into the band’s evolution, capturing them at the height of their creative powers. Whether you’re a longtime Nektar fan or new to the band, this set offers an excellent starting point.
