Portishead’s “Roseland NYC Live 25”: A Monumental 25th Anniversary Reissue

Portishead, the band that redefined the boundaries of trip-hop with their dark, brooding soundscapes, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of their iconic live album, “Roseland NYC Live,” with a meticulously remastered and expanded edition. This special release, overseen by the band, not only revisits the haunting beauty of the original 1998 performance but also enriches it with previously unreleased material, including the original Roseland performances of ‘Sour Times’ and ‘Roads.’

Scheduled for release on April 26, “Roseland NYC Live 25″ is set to captivate fans old and new. This anniversary edition breathes new life into the classic live recording, adding ‘Undenied’ and ‘Numb’ from the concert film, alongside the full-length performance of ‘Western Eyes’—a piece that previously graced only the credits of the film. The inclusion of these tracks, alongside the original Roseland versions of ‘Sour Times’ and ‘Roads,’ offers a more complete and immersive listening experience.

Available as a limited edition double-LP set on solid red vinyl, this collector’s dream includes a gatefold sleeve, a double-sided fold-out poster, and a replica of the guest ‘backstage’ sticky pass from the concert. For those who prefer the compact disc format, a Digipak CD version will also be available, complete with a 12-page booklet and the nostalgic ‘backstage’ pass. Each format of this reissue contains the same enriched tracklist, ensuring all fans can experience the expanded live magic of Portishead.

In addition to the main release, a limited edition 10” vinyl titled ‘LIVE 1998 SOUR TIMES / ROADS’ will be released on May 31. This companion piece, presented on black vinyl, features live recordings of ‘Sour Times’ and ‘Roads’ from performances in San Francisco and Kristiansand, respectively. These tracks, part of the original Roseland NYC Live album tracklist, offer a unique auditory glimpse into the band’s live prowess during that era.

“Roseland NYC Live” was not just a live album but a cultural milestone, recorded and filmed with a 28-piece orchestra at New York’s Roseland Ballroom in 1997. The performance, which sold over one million copies, spans tracks from Portishead’s groundbreaking debut album ‘Dummy’ as well as tracks from their equally revered self-titled second album. This 25th-anniversary edition is a tribute to the enduring legacy of Portishead and the unforgettable night at Roseland that fans can now relive and newcomers can experience for the first time.

As we anticipate the release of “Roseland NYC Live 25,” it’s clear that this isn’t merely a reissue but a celebration of Portishead’s enduring impact on music. Adrian Utley’s careful curation ensures that this edition is not just a revisit but an expansion of a pivotal moment in the band’s history. For fans old and new, this anniversary edition is a testament to the timeless allure of Portishead’s live performance, promising an immersive listening experience that transcends the boundaries of time and space.
