Rediscovering a Misunderstood Chapter in Randy California’s Journey
There are certain albums—and indeed certain periods in a band’s history—that get quietly pushed to one side. Not because they lack quality, but because they don’t fit the narrative fans expect.
That’s exactly where Sea Dream sits in the story of Spirit.
And this new 4CD box set from Esoteric Recordings is an attempt to finally give that period the depth, context, and respect it deserves.
I’ve already been exploring Spirit’s catalogue through the excellent Cherry Red releases covering their earlier years, and once you go down that path, you realise just how varied their journey really was.
So when I saw Sea Dream being revisited and expanded—with additional live material and a completely refreshed presentation—it immediately felt like a missing piece of the puzzle.
What Is Sea Dream – And Why Was It Misunderstood?
The original Sea Dream material (recorded in the early 2000s but rooted in much earlier creative ideas) represents a very different side of Spirit—largely shaped by the vision of Randy California.
By this point, we’re a long way from the psychedelic rock of Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus.
Instead, what you get here is:
- Expansive, ambient soundscapes
- Long-form compositions
- A deeply spiritual and introspective tone
- Music that feels closer to meditation than traditional rock
At the time, that shift confused a lot of listeners.
Listening to this set now, in 2026, it feels like the world has finally caught up with it.
The centrepiece is the 13-minute “Deep Blue Sea”—a track that doesn’t behave like a traditional song at all. It unfolds slowly, almost like a piece of film music or a guided meditation.
By expanding the material and placing it in context, you start to understand what Randy California was aiming for:
Randy California’s playing still carries:
- Emotion
- Fluidity
- That slightly psychedelic edge
- And a refusal to follow the rules
Whether you’re listening to the quieter passages or the more structured pieces, you always know it’s him.
The Live Material – A Completely Different Energy
If the studio material is introspective and meditative…
…the live recordings are the complete opposite.
This is where the box set really opens up.
You get:
- Raw, powerful performances
- A band that still rocks hard when it wants to
- A brilliant live take on All Along the Watchtower
